Dream Bembang!: Kitchie
Nadal

Good choice Kitchie!
A picture was worth a thousand words until the movie was invented; A series
of pictures enriched with sound. Real life analogy: A picture is to a pretty
class and a movie is to Kitchie Nadal. By looking at her one would not have
any trouble musing a thousand words. By watching her perform - think pretty
class, gracious moves, angelic voice. You do the math.
Bembang! was given the chance to interview Kitchie Nadal one March afternoon
at Starbucks Taft. Pictures in mind, we grabbed all the digicams that we could
and conducted a mini-photoshoot at Starbucks with only a couple of frappucinos
ordered. Thanks to Starbucks by the way for not kicking us out.
Ok, for the sake of you who have no clue who Kitchie Nadal is, here's a brief
history: Kitchie used to be the lead singer for the band Mojofly - a very
popular band in the Philippines that brought us the hits "Another Day",
"Minamalas" and "Scooter Boy" among others. Hundreds of
fans were left heartbroken when she decided to leave the band early 2003.
Now, she is back in the scene as Kitchie Nadal the solo artist and has already
produced radio friendly singles like "Run" and "Deliverance".
More information is available at her website - www.kitchienadal.com.
Bembangers! Minamalas ba kayo? Steady ka lang dyan, read our interview with
Kitchie Nadal and please don't wait Another Day, worse don't Run at
baka maunahan pa kayo ng mga Scooter Boys! Basa na dali our very mixed-launguaged
interview. Pasensya na hindi ko na tinranslate para talagang makuha
nyo yung feel nung interview!
Kitchie The Musician
Bembang!: I'm going to ask you questions
about your music first.
Kitchie: Ok.
Bembang!: Do you have an album already?
Kitchie: No, no albums yet. But we're
part of four compilation albums. Umm
Tunog Acoustic, Acoustic
Night Live, Perfectly Acoustic 2, and Jam Sessions.
Bembang!: And all of these are under
different companies right?
Kitchie: yah
Bembang!: If you get signed to a label,
does this mean that you won't be able to include those songs that
were part of the compilations?
Kitchie: Maybe
I don't know yet
kasi right now we're Indie.
Bembang!: You have any indie album out?
Kitchie: No, wala pang album
.
None yet
Bembang!: Pero, wala kang plans na mag
Indie na lang
Kitchie: Umm, ngayon, Indie yung plan.
Bembang!: Give up na kayo sa labels?
Kitchie: No, hindi naman. Kasi ano,
we're doing it once at a time lang. Kasi parang
ngayon pa naman
parang wala pa naman yung need eh. Wala pang kaming reason to be part
or to sign under record companies.
Bembang!: Your songs Run, Deliverance,
Worthy, Bulong, etc. did you write all of these? Pati yung music?
Kitchie: Yah, although yung 'Bulong'
halo-halo na kami
. Contributions form the band.
Bembang!: Is the writing process a band
effort or?
Kitchie: No, just that song...
Bembang!: I see
Kitchie: Although, syempre musically
I allow them to express... give them the freedom to do whatever they
want.
Bembang!: The band that you play with,
do you have permanent members?
Kitchie: yah, permanent.
Bembang!: Can you tell me something
about your band?
Kitchie: There's Aaron, si Marco on
drums, Jeff on guitars
Bembang!: Are they from other bands
before?
Kitchie: um, yah. Pero, ano
actually,
this is their first band na alternative band eh
first din na
mag record, etc.
Bembang!: Yung song na "Steady
ka lang" di ba from Mojofly pa yun? Is that the only Mojofly
song that you're planning to include on the album?
Kitchie: Actually, we're not sure yet
if we're gonna include that song. As of now parang hindi, we just
play it live.
Bembang!: About your song writing, do
you have any specific formula on how to write songs?
Kitchie: Walang formula eh, iba-iba
rin bawat song...
Bembang!: What about the chords?
Kitchie: Ako rin gumagawa.
Bembang!: Ok, do you have any plans
of being in a band again? I mean not as "Kitchie Nadal"?
Kitchie: No plans yet but um... well
I gues one step at a time nalang muna. So, wala pang plano right now.
Bembang!: Why did you leave Mojofly?
Kitchie: Well one of the major reasons
is because of school. I went back to school. I'm majoring now.
Bembang!: La Salle right?
Kitchie: Yah.
Bembang!: When are you graduating?
Kitchie: Probably next year. Hopefully
next year.
Bembang!: Was Mojofly your first band?
Kitchie: Yah.
Bembang!: Ok here's a cheesy question.
As an artist, what's the one thing that you want to achieve the most?
Kitchie: For me, to learn and to explore
about the culture, the music here in the Philippines as an artist
and be influenced.
Bembang!: What's your favorite song
among the songs that you've written and why?
Kitchie: "You're Worthy".
Bembang!: Can you tell us a little something
about it? What is it about?
Kitchie: Kasi yung song is ano eh
parang yun kasi yung one of the great things or greatest revelation
na natutunan ko. Actually it is a mixture of religion and personal
things.
Bembang!: Who are your influences in
the local music scene?
Kitchie: Of course, Mojofly.Well I love
the bands here. Like Sugarfree, Rivermaya, Eraserheads, but I don't
know kung na-influence ako talaga eh. So, I really can't say.
Bembang!: Puro lalake yun ah. What about
bands with girls, like Barbie's Cradle, etc?
Kitchie: Si Barbie? Malayo kami eh.
Hindi siguro ako na-influence.
Kitchie: Sa music definitely, hindi.
Siguro ang masasabi ko lang, sa friendship namin.
Bembang!: Ok, What about sa pagsulat
ng lyrics. Is there anyone that you look up to when it comes to lyrics?
Kitchie: Sabi nila, si Joni Mitchell.
A lot of people like her. Pero actually hindi ko pa na study yung
ibang lyrics nya, only a couple of songs lang.
Bembang!: Can you get to like a song
even if you don't understand the lyrics?
Kitchie: Oo naman.Because sometimes
you don't know the reason why you like the song. Parang it's a subconscious
thing.
Bembang!: Did you write "Scooter
Boy"?
Kitchie: No.
Bembang!: Ok.
Bembang!: Do you hate being compared
to other artists?
Kitchie: Parang hindi naman yata ako
naco-compare eh. Parang never pa akong na-compare.
Bembang!: Never ka pa na-compare.?
Kitchie: Oo. Not yet
Here in the
Philippines?
Bembang!: Yah.
Kitchie: None so far.
Bembang!: Can you describe the sound
that you'd like to achieve as Kitchie Nadal?
Kitchie: Cultured.
Bembang!: Cultured?
Kitchie: Cultured
Yun nay un eh.
How can you describe cultured? I want something where there's a sense
of history. Meaningful.
Kitchie: Iba iba rin yung mga ginagawa
kong songs eh. Merong pop, merong medyo jazz, merong danceable. So,
I don't want to limit myself also.

Bembang!: Dati kasi "what's your
favorite color" ang tinatanong sa akin
Kitchie: Well, you don't consider this
as a job?
Bembang!: Not really. I mean not yet
siguro. Do you remember the very first person who asked you for your
autograph?
Kitchie: No, not anymore.
Bembang!: During your gigs, from your
previous gigs, what is the worst thing that anyone ever told you or
shouted at you?
Kitchie: Parang wala pa naman. Siguro
yung pinaka worst na yung nambabato, pero yung mga big gigs yun eh.
So, parang lahat naman binato eh. So, ok lang.
Bembang!: Ano yung tumama sa'yo?
Kitchie: Mineral water yata... Di naman
ako directly tinamaan...
Bembang!: Do you smoke? Do you drink?
Kitchie: No.
