Still not ready...

A MOMMY, HER, A MOM? She cannot picture it. She pretty much has been raised by her brothers and sister, as the baby of the family… and being a mommy is so a new thing to her. She has been to Sunday school for almost her childhood years, and children are naturally drawn to her. She is her sister's babysitter, because they know she loves kids so dearly. They get along just great. She adores the honest freshness of childhood, and she knows how to talk to kids. Kids are like miniature adults - they do not need you to spell out words for them or talk like they are little monkeys in OshKosh suits. They know more than adults think.

She belongs to the generation that rocks, that listened to The Calling, Incubus, Sandwich, etc., and learned music history by watching the MTV everyday of her life. She can sing almost all of the words to Avril Lavigne's Complicated and Sk8r Boi. She admires Madonna for her eccentricity and would admire Britney Spears for following the footsteps of the great 'material girl'. She eats Coco Crunch and drank Gatorade after her sports activity. 'AstroBoy' still makes her nostalgic. "ET" was the first movie she ever understood. She makes fun of Coca Cola's newest "eto ang beat" chant at work and makes fun of it until she gets home. This just means that-- she is too young to be a mom!

But a child of her own-- she really does not know. Somehow, while she was thinking of her batch mates having their own kids at such an early age, seeing some friends of hers who already have children clambering onto their parents' laps for hugs or digging in their pockets for the ever present stick of gum, or helping them invent funny rhymes, she starts to imagine the face of a little tiny girl with black hair and a gentle heart, a little boy with his father's easy grin and his mother's dark skin. Somehow children got lost in the rush. Those children are hers.

People have been accustomed to seeing her slim, fit, and healthy, with no bulging tummy. After all, she has been single all the years of her life. Always on the go, she rarely is seen in the couch watching TV for one whole day. At home, she usually just sleeps in her room and wake up if it is just already time to eat. In short, her life is pretty much normal. But now that she is expecting her first baby-- everything seems to be different.

"So…," they say, sitting next to her at a picnic table, "When are you going to bless the family with a child?" She struggles not to choke on her barbecued chicken and resist the urge to blurt out, "When are you going to bless the family with less nosiness?!"

A mommy, her, a mom… maybe.
