"A Journey With Purpose*"

I am sure that you have heard the cliché "Life is a journey; not a destination." a couple of times in the past. I have. And, personally, I have never given it importance until I have read Rick Warren's The Purpose Driven Life. Ironically, on April's Fool Day, I finished the book. I started reading it last February 21, 2004. Yes! It took me 40 days to read 40 chapters and 319 pages of manuscript. Do not give me the "duh-look," please. I am not a slow reader. It was done on purpose. I could have read it in one sitting, but I opted to follow the author's idea, which I am glad I did. On page 10 of his book, Warren advised his readers to read only a chapter a day to give them time to reflect on the implications of each section on their lives. And besides, the number 40 is quite significant in the Bible. Life does not just start at 40, but most importantly, God takes 40 days if He wants to make someone ready to fulfill His purposes. Take the time out to read the Bible and you will be surprised to find out that 40 is really a spiritually significant number.

Life is, indeed, a journey and not a destination. Most of us are always in hurry to get at the peak of our lives that we tend to overlook the more important things in life. To have a fat bank account, a successful career, and a happy life is not the essence of our existence. They are good things to endeavor, but God's purposes are better.

The Purpose Driven Life outlined the 5 most important goals of our lives. These are goals that will not only guarantee that we have a meaningful and well-lived life while we are here on earth, but goals that will surely secure us a place in eternity.

The Purpose Driven Life is not a self-help book on personal growth and development. It is a book that guides us to grow in spirit. It does not provide tips on how we can be PhP20,000,000.00 richer, but it presents us guidelines on how we can share God's wealth in His kingdom.

The Purpose Driven Life will change you. Not in an instant. It will gradually make you a better Christian if you honestly stick to your commitment. There are no shortcuts in traveling back to Heaven.

Lent is just around the corner. Or have you forgotten? I am not a hardcore Catholic to give you a sermon on remembering the Lent or the importance of reading the Bible or other "holy" reminders. In fact, I am not what you can exactly call religious. I am not religious at all. I seldom attend church services. In a year, I have probably gone to 2 or 3 masses - my birthday, Christmas, and New Year. My relationship with my God is personal, I always say. But, I know deep down inside of me, I am just justifying my laziness to attend worship.
This Lent, I am changed. Not 100% changed yet. Maybe I am just 0.5% changed or maybe even lower. But, the point is, I am changing to be the person God has shaped me to be. I know now where I am going. My journey is now clearer. I am not in a hurry to get there. I want to savor every step and every way and every route that I am taking for I know it is worth it.

As Lee Strobel, author of The Case for Christ, commented, "Believe me, you'll never be the same after reading this. What a gift." And, I second the motion. Do not just take our word for it. Experience the trip yourself.

This Lent, book your journey with Rick Warren and his masterpiece, The Purpose Driven Life. Invite a friend, too. And, it will only cost you PhP175.00 to enjoy this 40-day journey.
